The McCain Brand

The McCain Brand

by Jean Carnahan

The corporate media kindly refers to John McCain as a “maverick.”  That’s a nice western term for a wild, unbranded steer.

But a review of his political positions shows a pattern of pathological hypocrisy.  McCain has been both for and against campaign finance reform, choice, tax cuts, torture, the Confederate flag, the religious right, and ethanol production.  In recent years, the Arizona senator has done more flip-flopping than Aunt Jemima.

This week he welcomed Swift Boat attacker Bud Day to his crew, accepting the funding and support of the very hate mongers he once condemned for their dirty deeds against John Kerry.

Either McCain lacks core values or he has simply forgotten his previous positions.  Both make him a dangerous prospect for the presidency.  Once upon a time there may have been a “straight talking” McCain, (though I now suspect it, too, was a myth), but all evidence of that has vanished.

Face it, John McCain is no maverick; let’s brand him for what he really is: a political opportunist.
