Hitler Was Gay, Gay Fascists Are Taking Over Springfield, and Other Things You Didn't Know

Beware, Springfield! This dude is en route.

Scott Lively -- the genuinely extreme anti-gay activist who wrote a whole book on how "the Nazi Party was entirely controlled by militaristic homosexuals” – is coming to Missouri to combat heretofore unknown “Gay Fascism” in Springfield.

Seriously. This is not a made-up person.

Lively, a resident of Massachusetts, is bent out of shape by a proposed city ordinance to add protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, and is organizing a “special educational meeting and rally” to oppose the proposal.  In his words, the proposal is “a ‘Gay Fascism’ Bill that will make disapproval of homosexuality illegal in the City of Springfield.”

Nuts, but probably one of the least offensive and incendiary things Lively has spewed into the world.  Here’s what you need to know about Scott Lively:

  • He’s best known for co-authoring The Pink Swastika: Homosexuality in the Nazi Party. The book makes a series of claims that virtually no serious historian agrees with: that Hitler was gay, that "the Nazi Party was entirely controlled by militaristic homosexuals," and that gays were especially selected for the SS because of their innate brutality.
  • He calls for the criminalization of "the public advocacy of homosexuality."
  • He is directly linked to anti-gay legislation in Uganda, which makes being gay a crime punishable by death.  Lively described the campaign in which he participated to pass the bill as a "nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda."
  • He believes that homosexuality will cause "some sort of infrastructure collapse in society." (See 0:43 mark here.)
  • He thinks being gay should be criminalized like marijuana: "To reverse the current trend toward sexual anarchy, society will need to establish new public policies that actively discourage sex outside of marriage, including homosexuality. Such policies should be strong enough to prevent government from facilitating, endorsing or condoning sexual activity outside of marriage, but only as restrictive on personal liberties as necessary to maintain a family-centered culture. One model for such policy might be current laws in some states that criminalize marijuana usage but provide minimal sanctions for violations..."
  • He says "the gay movement is an evil institution that’s goal is to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity in which there’s no restrictions on sexual conduct except the principle of mutual choice."

Genuinely hateful, unhinged stuff.

I look forward to seeing Springfield leaders and residents ignore this guy’s nonsense, and passing the proposed ordinance.
